Program
“Designing With
Engineered Wood Products”
I. Overview of
Engineered Wood Products
With the expanding
choice and use of engineered wood products (EWPs) in today's housing
market, it's now more important than ever to understand how to
properly select, install and detail engineered wood materials.
In this seminar, we
will introduce plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), glue laminated
timbers (glulams), I-joists, and laminated veneer lumber (LVL), plus
the benefits of engineered wood and its proper application. In
addition we will discuss the application, selection and installment
of: Wood structural panels; Glulam and LVL; and I-Joists and Rimboard.
II. Top 10 Framing
Errors
Based on hundreds of
job site inspections, the APA has identified the most common wood
construction framing and sheathing errors found in today's residential
construction. This session will examine the consequences of the errors
and provide practical solutions for avoiding them.
Topics include: 1.) Construction and selection of wood structural
panels, grade stamps, span ratings, fastener recommendations, panel
storage and moisture control. 2.) Floor sheathing and installation,
wall sheathing and bracing concerns, roof sheathing and installation.
moisture intrusion and control. 3.) I-Joist construction and
selection, forces acting on I-Joists, size and location of holes,
joist layout, handling vertical loads, installation details, blocking,
and rimboards. 4.) LVL construction and loading, Glulam layup,
construction, selection, and installation details.
III. Introduction to
Wall Bracing
“Brace Yourself for
Mother Nature”
Why all the fuss
about wall bracing? Wall bracing is nothing new, but because house
designs today feature more and larger openings and narrower wall
segments, finding effective wall bracing solutions has become a major
challenge for most builders, designers and building officials.
Although the 2006 Residential Codes and the 2007 Supplementary Codes
offer a number of wall bracing solutions, understanding them can be a
pain. In this seminar, participants will receive a thorough overview
of wall bracing terminology, bracing methods and code requirements
along with simple, practical and code approved solutions for your
challenging designs. After this seminar, understanding wall bracing
and bracing options will become
just a breeze.
Presenter
Tom Milton
is an Engineered Wood Specialist in the Field Services Division of
APA-The Engineered Wood Association. Based out of Maple Grove, MN,
he is responsible for engineered wood product development and
technical assistance in Minnesota, North and South Dakota and
northern Wisconsin. Working with builders, building inspectors,
building material dealers, engineers, architects, and their
respective associations, he provides technical information and
educational seminars on engineered wood products and related
subjects. Tom has been with APA since April 2006.
Tom’s training is in forestry, wood
science, forest products marketing and manufacturing. As an
Extension Specialist with the University of Minnesota Extension
Service for over 20 years, he helped wood product producers improve
their manufacturing efficiencies and marketing strategies. With
this “well seasoned” background, he welcomes the opportunity to
provide practical and useful information about engineered wood
products and construction details for builders and building
professionals.
