Lateral Design Considerations for
Garage Walls and Tall Walls

This course covers three topics that are of particular interest to the ALA design professional:

Portal Bracing Systems for Garage Side Walls covers the many design considerations and framing options that have recently been introduced. In depth knowledge of these framing options are necessary to avoid solving one problem while creating another.

Attendees will learn about:

  • Lateral wind design considerations at garage side walls

  • Code bracing methods for fully sheathed and non-fully sheathed structures

  • Continuous garage door headers used in IRC portal frames

  • Single/Double Portal frame Shear panels

Design of Laterally Un-Braced Garage Door Headers provides an overview of the Wood

I-Joist Manufacturers Association recommendations to ensure adequate lateral bracing of a dropped garage door header. The industry recommendations were developed through laboratory experiments.

This portion covers:

  • Field examples

  • Testing overview/Destructive Testing Videos

  • Industry installation recommendations

Tall Wall Design Considerations reviews code requirements for tall wall design, common design/framing mistakes, and also answers the most frequently asked questions that we have received concerning tall wall design.

This portion covers:

  • Design requirements

  • Common framing mistakes

  • Commonly asked tall wall design questions
