After ten years of sponsoring a highly successful Chicago
Architecture Conference, the Association of Licensed Architects
(ALA) is bringing a new all day mini Conference to St. Louis,
Missouri. In between technical seminars offering continuing
education on sustainable subjects, will be a Product Show with over
20 exhibitors. Attendees will learn more about sustainability,
receive updates on new products and services, and have questions
answered about for their current and FUTURE PROJECTS.
This Conference is
for architects, specifiers, engineers and contractors. It qualifies
for 5.0 LU’S (HSW) of State Required Learning Units and other
organization LU requirements. “Certificates of Completion” will be
available.
1st
Seminar:
Sustainable Design with Architectural Precast Concrete
by Mitch McCaulley
of Thermomass Building Insulation Systems
This seminar will
describe the basic concepts related to energy conservation and
condensation control of mold / mildew. The insulating properties of
pre-cast concrete sandwich panels will be discussed along with LEED
and other sustainable rating systems.
2nd
Seminar:
Masonry Walls and
Concrete Floors in Sustainable Design
by Paul Grahovac
of PROSOCO, Inc
As the
construction industry places increasing value on sustainability,
energy and resource conservation, and environmental quality, this
seminar details the crucial role traditional building materials play
in meeting these needs. The richly illustrated presentation shows
how air barriers, and products and procedures for finished concrete
flooring get top performance out of masonry and concrete, while
achieving numerous LEED objectives.
3rd
Seminar:
By the
Numbers – Is Brick Red or Green?
by Leroy Danforth
Jr., EIT, LEED AP of the Brick Industry Association.
Advanced
information on how brick fits into today’s sustainable designs will
be provided, including a review of each LEED point that brick may
potentially contribute to. This seminar highlights a brick industry
survey quantifying sustainable measures employed in the brick
manufacturing process. The information on new uses of recycled
materials, waste landfill gas in firing brick kilns, and new
pollution control devices will allow architects to determine if
brick is truly an environmentally preferable material.
4th
Seminar:
Insulated
Concrete Form Walls
by Stephen Brown
of Logix Insulated Concrete Forms
With continually
growing energy costs, and the mainstream adoption of green building
methods and products, learning the how's, why's, and what's of
Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) technology is essential for today's
architects. Understanding the real facts and the proven project
applications, and then being able to explain the pros and the cons
of using ICF's to a client, adds value in today’s market.

Seminar:
It’s In the Details
by Jeffrey
Denenberg of Hamill Mullan Group, Inc.
The devil is in
the details, and roofing proves the point project after project.
This seminar will highlight some common pitfalls in installation
practices and will demonstrate the advantages of writing detailed
specifications. It also spends time illustrating short-cuts often
used in roof retrofits and the problems that arise. Accessories to
provide better water tight installations will be illustrated.
