Mr. Bil Becker, CEO and Founder of Aerotecture International, Inc.

Mr. Bil Becker, inventor, innovator, renewable energy visionary and former Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Illinois-Chicago will address the renewable energy movement from a broad perspective.  He will discuss the history and evolution of a variety of technologies including wind, solar, and energy efficiency.   His presentation will focus on how these modalities can be integrated into existing and new architecture.   Mr. Becker's engaging style blends academic and technical information with hands-on experience, for a look at the future of renewable energy as a component of buildings.

Session I
10:30am - 12:00noon

B1- Introduction to Aluminum and Natural Metal Composite Material

Tony Rapisarda, Alcoa and Lonni, Jones, Shaffner Heaney & Assoc.

1.5 LU/HSW

Overview of Metal Panel Systems (MCM)--application, manufacturing process, availability and offerings. Learn how a rainscreen wall functions, compare rainscreen design to standard wall construction, review the benefits in rainscreen design and LEED credits.

S1- When Green Means Caution: Managing Risks of Sustainable Design

Wendy Arnold, Holmes Murphy & Associates, Inc.

 1.5 LU/HSW/SD

It’s not easy being GREEN. Firms utilizing sustainable design techniques face many new challenges and hurdles. In this presentation, participants will understand “why” Owners are seeking to be GREEN ; why Architects and Engineers are following suit; and learn to bridge the gap between perception and reality. Real-life claim examples will be discussed, and practical guidance given to firms to consider when undertaking these projects.

L1- Using Intelligent Objects for Efficient 2D Documentation

David Webster, MasterGraphics, Inc.

1.5 LU

Learn how to create designs and documentation more efficiently, automate tedious drafting tasks and help reduce errors, and centrally manage and update project standards — all within the familiar AutoCAD user environment? AutoCAD Architecture offers immediate productivity gains resulting in better projects delivered faster. During this seminar we will show you some of the best tips and tricks to apply the technology you currently own and improve your 2D design productivity.

G1- An Introduction to the New Green Building Codes

Christopher Chwedyk, AIA, CSI; The Code Group-Burnham Nationwide

1.5 LU/HSW/SD

This seminar will introduce the new International Green Construction Code (IgCC), ASHRAE 189 and ICC 700 Residential Green Code. Jurisdictions will be evaluating and potentially adopting these codes in the very near future and this is your opportunity to become familiar with their general content and components, how they differ from energy codes and LEED, and how they might be applied to future building projects.

T1- Below Grade and Plaza Deck Waterproofing

Stacy Byrd, CSI, LEED AP; CETCO

1.5 LU/HSW

Education about unique solutions to tough waterproofing problems in commercial, civil, and residential applications. There are a range of waterproofing systems for new construction as well as remedial applications, such as; diversified sodium bentonite product line, thermoplastic, hot-applied rubberized asphalt waterproofing, green-scapes, self adhered sheet membranes, spray-applied technology, concrete joint waterstops, and prefabricated composite drainage- Which are used on a number of applications that include backfilled walls, under slabs, vaults, tunnels, blind-side property line construction, plaza decks, split slabs and green roofs. Most importantly, learn how specifying the right quality control procedures and warranty coverage.

Session II
1:15pm - 2:45pm

B2- Fluid-Applied Air, Vapor and Water-Resistive Barriers – Function and Specification

Richard Martens, LEED AP; BASF Corporation

1.5 LU/HSW/SD

Air/water-resistive barriers are a cost-effective way to reduce energy consumption and protect buildings from mold and moisture damage. Performance requirements for air/water-resistive barriers are changing as their use becomes more widespread, and innovative application techniques are gaining popularity. This presentation discusses the characteristics of fluid-applied air, vapor and water-resistive barriers and outlines performance-based specification strategies.

S2- Sustainable Approach to Improving Indoor Air Quality

Jeffrey Roseberry ChE;, ProMark Associates, Inc.

1.5 LU/HSW/SD

A 21st Century approach to Indoor Air Purification that renders as inefficient the conventional HVAC solution of continuously adding, and conditioning, outside air to achieve acceptable Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Today existing U.S. buildings consume 60% of their electricity costs for HVAC, and even with that demand, the achieved IAQ in healthcare facilities, schools and commercial buildings often falls short, causing loss of productivity, illness and disease. By focusing on extreme purification of indoor air, not only are those health issues eliminated, but a reduction in energy usage, and thus a true ROI, is achieved by reducing the requirement to bring in, and either heat or cool, outside air.

L2- Feeling Lucky? 13 Contract Provisions to Hold, Fold or Discard: Insurance, Law and Risk Management

Melissa Roberts; Euclid Insurance and Eric Singer; Ice Miller, LLP

1.5 LU

We've all seen them: contract provisions that were so poorly worded that you could not possibly agree to them. How should they be changed? What about contracts with less obvious language, or missing provisions? Join us for this informative and fast-paced presentation that will walk you through 13 key contract clauses that are useful, harmful or often improperly written. We will use experience, stories and yes, even some humor, to illustrate the supporting risk management, insurance and legal concepts.

G2- Garden & Energy Efficient Roofing in Chicago and Beyond

Bill McHugh, CSI; Chicagoland Roofing Council and Rod Petrick, Ridgeworth Roofing

1.5 LU/HSW/SD

The Chicagoland Professional Roofing Contractors have been involved in Garden and Environmentally Friendly Roofing since the inception of the concept in the USA, at Chicago’s City Hall and beyond. Listen as you hear key roofing points to consider when venturing into garden roofs, while unraveling the mystery of Chicago’s Urban Heat Island Effect Ordinance, and Energy

T2- From ANSI to ISO

Heather Yario-Rice, CSI, CDT; MAPEI

1.5 LU/HSW

The changes in ceramic tile have created issues with the installation of products. The larger sizes and move toward porcelain, metals, natural stone and glass cannot be expected to have successful installation under one blanket standard. This presentation explains how the standards are changing and why the A&D community needs to be more specific with their specifications.

Session III
3:30pm - 5:00pm

B3- Commercial Roofing - Critical Knowledge for Designers

Marty Jolly, GenFlex Roofing Systems

1.5 LU/HSW/SD

A comprehensive overview of critical roofing knowledge for today’s building designers. Learn about a broad range of roofing topics, covering basic topics like roofing components and applications to more detailed information about various assemblies, roof details and roof slopes. Discuss applicable installation techniques and model building codes as they relate to low-slope commercial roofing.

Mr. Michael De Rouin, AIA, CSI, CCCA; FitzGerald Associates Architects

 1.5 LU/HSW/SD

The recent emergence of green building rating systems raises questions about the cost of compliance with each system. Architect Michael De Rouin AIA, CSI, CCCA will present an extensive cost comparison of the Chicago Green Homes Program, the ICC-NAHB National Green Building Standard, and LEED for Homes V.1. The comparison—executed by experienced builders and architects—sheds new light on the true cost of the building standards’ respective ratings.
